Are you curious about the Regensburg Christmas Markets? Regensburg is a charming Bavarian city with five magical Christmas Markets, making it one of the best places in Germany for Christmas markets. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage city along the Danube River, Regensburg is a living piece of history that comes alive during the holidays.

Regensburg is the perfect blend of historic ambiance and festive variety. The city is large enough to host five Christmas Markets spread throughout the city, yet the markets retain the cozy, intimate feel of a small village.

The most famous market is the Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn and Taxis Palace, which is just as magical as it sounds. You’ll also find a cozy market along the Danube River, an artisan market, a market with live music, and even one of Bavaria’s most beautiful markets.

Imagine yourself shopping for local crafts and sipping sparkling wine overlooking a stunning, historic palace lit up for the season—The Regensburg markets have that pure Bavarian magic.

Regensburg is easily accessible by train from central Munich in under two hours, making it a sustainable and worthwhile stop for a night or two after you’ve fully explored some of Munich’s 25 incredible Christmas Markets.

This guide covers everything you need to know to spend quality time enjoying the festive markets of Regensburg. I’ll share details about all five markets, how to get there (including sustainable transit from Munich), where to stay, what to eat, and special Christmas events!

Regensburg Christmas Market Dates 2026

The five Regensburg Christmas Markets all have slightly different open and closing dates.

The most popular market and the central market to see is the Christmas Market at the Thurn and Taxis Palace, which is open from November 20 to December 23, 2026.

The primary city-hosted market at Neupfarrplatz is expected to be open from November 23 to December 23, 2026.

However, some markets don’t open until November 28th.

While most markets in Regensburg are open Monday-Friday with varying hours, one is open only on long weekends.

You should also note that most Christmas Markets across Germany are closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, including the Regensburg markets.

That being said, if you want to visit all five markets, I suggest you visit Regensburg between December 1 and 23. This will guarantee you can see all the different markets and won’t get stuck when the markets are closed for the holiday.

For specific dates and hours of operation for each market, keep reading.

Regensburg Christmas Markets – Complete Guide

Each market in Regensburg offers something unique, and they are all worth visiting if you have enough time in the city.

Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn and Taxis Palace

The grand market at the Thurn and Taxis Palace is massive and oh so incredibly romantic. Taking over the entire palace courtyard and garden park (Schloss Emmeram Park), you could easily spend a few hours here alone. The magic at this market is not only your typical Christmas market food and vendor stalls, but also the palace ambiance as you walk the grounds.

Start in the palace courtyard. Take in the stunning palace walls, all decorated for Christmas, that surround you as you sip a piping-hot mug of Glühwein (mulled wine) to set the mood. At the center of the courtyard, a large natural tree shines with decorations. Traditional foods are grilled and roasted over an open flame.

Covered tables, a Christmas tree and smoke coming from a grill in a square surrounded by a palatial building.

Don’t miss the Bavarian potato soup in a bread bowl for the vegetarians, or roasted wild boar for the more adventurous.

My friend and I enjoyed sipping our hot drinks under the pine-covered huts as the sun sank below the horizon and festive string lights began to sparkle.

There is a selection of vendors here, so you can take your time exploring the goods and kick off your holiday shopping. However, there are many more vendors throughout the palace gardens.

As you leave the inner courtyard, take time to stroll along the palace’s outer walls. Dozens and dozens of vendors are lined up selling local goods, wares, and culinary offerings.

There are plenty of opportunities to warm up over the numerous fire pits or stop for Glühwein.

Make your way up and out to the gardens. There is a pavilion on a hill serving sparking wine, and if you time it just right, you can enjoy a drink as the night-light show starts. Colorful lights dance across the palace. The rest of the gardens are full of festive decorations, and the Children’s Magic Forest has rides and barn animals.

This market is undoubtedly the highlight of the Regensburg Christmas Markets. I spent hours here exploring the cozy nooks and crannies, shopping at all the vendors, and trying both the Glühwein and prosecco.

This is also a great market to just kill a few hours with friends. There are lots of cozy and intimate spots you can settle in for a night of enjoying drinks and conversations.

Romantic Christmas Market Entrance Tickets

This is a private market, so it is not hosted by the city of Regensburg. In a somewhat different approach from most of Germany’s Christmas Markets, you do need a ticket to enjoy the Romantic market. We purchased our tickets on the spot when we arrived.

Since I was living in Munich at the time, I went in the first year the market reopened after the pandemic, when international tourism was very low. So buying tickets on-site wasn’t an issue. However, I suggest you purchase tickets in advance online.

Regensburg Christmas Market at Neupfarrplatz

If you thought the Romantic market at the palace was beautiful, wait until you see the city-hosted market at Neupfarrplatz. The Regensburg public market surrounds the Neupfarrkirche (New Parish Church).

In the heart of Regensburg’s historic old town, browse market stalls and dine on regional delicacies, enjoying the very best of the Regensburg UNESCO heritage. The market dates back to the 1700s and continues to sell the original Regensburg Bratwurst, a staple since its early days.

This market has transitioned well to the modern age, with a delightful craft market. I enjoyed shopping at the local vendor stalls while sipping the regional apple Gluhwein, with apples sourced from the local nearby orchards. I heard the blueberry Glühwein is also a local treat!

With free admission, this market is the most popular among locals, and the program caters to families and adults alike. Every Wednesday, the St. Nikolas character visits to distribute treats and candy to children. For adults, there is a live music program with a string and bands that play festive music with a Bavarian twist.

Regensburg Advent Market at Katharinespital

Outside the old historic city walls, the Advent Market is located across the historic Medieval bridge on a small island in the middle of the Danube River. I love this cozy market. It is intimate and local. Stroll along the Danube, stopping at huts along the shores, and stop for some Glühbier (mulled beer) and warm up around the bonfires.

This market feels the coziest to me and offers a peaceful, joyful experience, highlighting the best of Advent traditions. One highlight is the incredible views of Regensburg Cathedral and the Medieval city skyline. I loved walking across the historic bridge and looking back at the city.

The booths here are tailored to local shoppers, and you can pick up a unique local souvenir. The wool products are what this market is known for!

There is a larger concert every Thursday. Every other day of the week there is a rich music program, with live bands, singers, jazz, and so much more!

Lucrezia Market at Haidplatz

The Lucrezia Market is THE cultural and craft market. The entrance to this cozy market is at Haidplatz. This circular market is easy to explore, but you’ll want to take your time to enjoy the exceptional craft and handiwork.

The Lucrezia market is known for unique, artisan-designed gifts. If you have someone special on your list and are looking for a special one-of-a-kind gift, then spend some time at Haidplatz.

While the market looks small, there are two stages featuring cultural and arts programs. If you have extra time, don’t forget to visit the Thon-Dittmer-Palais and the Sigismund Chapel. Here you will find a special annual art exhibition.

Magical Count’s Christmas Market at Rosarium

If you are looking for hearty traditional food with a modern food truck flair, this is the place to come! The Gnoccheria food truck is to die for! They even have FIVE vegan gnocchi sauces, plus dessert gnocchi. There are plenty of other vendors to choose from, including modern Indian and sweet vendors.

While the market’s name is a bit odd, it feels like the most traditional meets modern to me, and I really dig the vibe.

Whether you are looking for ceramics, honey, unique upcycled art, local jewelry, books, and really creative gifts, the diverse and unique vendors are fun to shop at.

Don’t miss the special concert events like Christmas Caroling on December 20th.

How Many Days Do You Need in Regensburg for Christmas Markets?

I suggest staying 2 nights to fully explore all the markets and enjoy shopping, dining, and drinking at a slower pace. Most of the markets are in the central Old Town and within walking distance of each other. The market on the Danube is a bit of a walk outside the city, across the Steinerne Brücke.

If you have only one night, prioritize visiting the Romantic Market and Nuepfarrplatz Weihnachtmark. Then, if you have more time, select one or two other markets from the list. You could certainly “see” them all in one night with a bit of determination, walking, and an express pace, but it is better to either stay two nights or prioritize the two main markets.

How to get to Regensburg from Munich

The easiest and most sustainable way to reach Regensburg to enjoy the festive Christmas markets is by train. From Munich, the trip is fast and easy, departing directly from Hauptbahnhof (Main Station).

You will take the regional train, which will take you from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Regensburg Hauptbahnhof in under 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Ticket prices vary, but the most cost-effective option for groups is the Bayern Ticket (Bavaria Ticket). This is a fantastic day pass that offers unlimited travel on regional trains for an entire day, starting at around €27 for a single person and increasing slightly for each additional traveler (up to five people). For groups of 2-5, this is often far cheaper per person than buying individual tickets. There are some rules on how this ticket works. For example, you must leave after rush hour at 9 am (weekends excluded).

If you’re traveling solo or can book a regional ticket, expect prices to start around €22–€30 for a single journey.

There are many departures daily from Munich to Regensburg. Check the timetables and departures before arriving at Munich’s Hauptbahnhof 45 minutes before your scheduled train departure.

Once you arrive, Regensburg’s Hauptbahnhof is centrally located, making it a quick, easy walk into the Old Town.

Where to Stay in Regensburg for Christmas?

I always look for boutique and sustainable hotels in the heart of Regensburg.

For a traditional and simple boutique hotel, book Herzogshof am Dom. This boutique hotel in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Old Town offers classic German hospitality with a modern twist.

For a boutique hotel highlighting the diversity in Regensburg, book Orphee Boutique Hotel. In the charming side streets of old Regensburg, this quirky hotel offers plenty of personality. A highly rated, internationally diverse, and women-led crew will take care of you!

About Regensburg

Regensburg is one of my favorite cities in Germany. I’ve been a few times, and each time, I found something new to explore. While I should probably write a standard travel guide covering all the amazing things to do in Regensburg, for this guide, I’ll keep the introduction brief to focus on festive Advent activities.

Regensburg is among the most impressive cities in Germany. As the largest medieval city north of the Alps, Regensburg has long been a stronghold and important Bavarian city. With roots dating back to the Stone Age, modern Regensburg was established during the Roman Empire as a fortified settlement and served as the seat of a bishop during the Holy Roman Empire.

A cobbled street with light-colored buildings on one side and a rounded tower with old stones on the other.

Scattered throughout the city you’ll find remains of the Roman Empire. These ruins can be seen at open-air sites, but you’ll also notice old Roman brickwork embedded in medieval timber buildings. Keep an eye out for these ruins as you explore.

With its strategic location on the Danube, Regensburg served as the capital of Bavaria before Munich. Once the first bridge across the Danube at Regensburg was built, the city became a significant trading hub between southern Europe, Venice, and the North.

A bridge with people walking on it leading to pastel colored buildings with a clock tower and arches underneath.

During WWII, the Nazis sent most of the Jewish population to Dachau Concentration Camp near Munich. The city itself sustained only minor damage during both World Wars. It is now recognized for its intact Roman ruins, well-preserved medieval architecture, and a 12th-century stone bridge.

As you visit the Regensburg Christmas Markets, take time to explore its unique history. Since most Christmas Markets only open in the evening, mornings and afternoons are a great time to explore on your own.
